Ever feel like you were born in the wrong decade? Do you crave the glamour of the 40s, the parties of the 60s and the sequins of the 80s? Don’t get us wrong, we love the freedom of today’s style – but sometimes to put your best fashion foot forward, you’ve got to look back.
It’s easy to create edgy glamour using the monochrome trend, it can be adapted to any decade and look flawless! Follow us back in time as we take some style notes from timeless fashion icons who knew a thing or two about looking good.
Vila Jose Sleeveless Shirt, At Republic Rib Skater Skirt, Motel Glamour Prom Spot Dress, Blink Marvel heels
We have two 1950s girls on our list, but we’re starting with the Grace Kelly, the stunning movie star turned Princess. Grace was always impeccably dressed and spent a good bit of her time in jaw-dropping couture gowns, as a bride she even made Kate Middleton look sloppy! We chose items that had a prim and proper vibe with an extra big helping of elegance.
AX Paris Sheer Panelled Midi Dress, At Republic Houndstooth T Shirt, Miso Pencil Skirt, Blink Brylee Boot Heels.
Our second 1950s girl is the notorious Miss Bettie Page, the racy pin-up girl with impeccable style. Bettie caused quite a stir in her era, the world wasn’t ready for her just yet – but she certainly knew how to pull together a look! For our Bettie inspired looks we chose items that show off your assets, figure hugging clothes with a set of killer heels is the best recipe to ace her style.
Rock and Rags by Firetrap Carly Crop Top, Uncut Elena Leggings, Motel Demelza Cut Out Dress, Rock and Rags by Firetrap Alexa Tip Court Heels.
For our next icon we’re jumping forward to the 1960s, we can’t get over Edie Sedgwick’s It girl vibe. Her look was extremely distinctive, she was a big lover of short dresses, tight trousers and chandelier earrings – it’s easy to see why she was Andy Warhol’s muse. For our Edie inspired looks we went for bodycon pieces with psychedelic prints.
At Republic Sequin Maxi Dress, Kat Vin D Starflyer Heels, Glamorous Dash Jumpsuit.
Our last fashion icon is one of the great DIVA’S of our time, the fabulous Donna Summer! The Queen of Disco certainly knew how to rock some sequins and always served drama with her outfit choices. For our Donna inspired looks we went with a striking jumpsuit and a sparkly maxi dress – if you don’t wear this look with a big set of curls, you’re not wearing it properly!
To create your own monochrome inspired look, check out our updated monochrome trend edit. We’ve included a range of pieces from Motel, Glamorous, AX Paris and G Star – you will find plenty of clothes and accessories to add some monochrome magic to your wardrobe. If you’re uploading USC outfit posts to instagram or twitter, remember to tag us #uscfashion – we love to see your style!
10 THINGS THAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT CONVERSE
1. The basic design of the Chuck Taylor Converse All Stars hasn’t changed since 1949 – they look pretty much the same now as they did when your Grandad was wearing them.
2. When launched in 1908, Converse sneakers only cost $1. You could have bought 50 pairs for what 1 pair will set you back today.
3. Who even is Chuck Taylor? Chuck Taylor, a man synonymous with Converse shoes, was a basketball player who became a salesman for the brand and promoted them tirelessly as the number one basketball shoe.
4. In 1936, Converse All-Stars were worn by team USA in the first ever Olympic basketball game, they went on to win 7 medals wearing them. This was the first time White Converse were introduced.
5. During World War II, American soldiers trained in All-Stars. If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for us!
6. Celebrities and tastemakers have always been fans of Converse. James Dean, David Bowie and Kurt Cobain all owned a pair of trusty Chuck Taylors.
7. The Ramones like to wear converse because, according to Tommy Ramone, in the ‘60s and ‘70s it was “Punky and Snotty” to wear sneakers instead of shoes.
8. The members of NWA loved to wear black converse all stars. They were inspired by gangsters wearing them with khaki trousers and white t-shirts.
9. A pair of converse shoes are sold every 43 seconds, that is A LOT of sneakers.
10. Converse have been immortalised on the big screen numerous times, they can be spotted in Harry Potter, Back to the Future, Wayne’s World and Footloose (to name a few)!
We’re proud to be home to an extensive selection of Converse shoes online, and host a wide variety of discounted styles in our Converse Sale Outlet. The most classic, sought after style is the white converse high tops. The white Chuck Taylor All Star Trainers are currently available for £50, however if you are looking for a cheaper alternative, the Converse Lo Platform Trainers are down to £27.50!

It only took Goldilocks 3 attempts to find the perfect bowl of porridge, don’t you think the fairytale would have definitely lasted a lot longer if she had been searching for the perfect pair of jeans? Unless you are extremely lucky, finding a new pair of jeans is a time consuming task; they need to be the right colour, the ideal fit and the optimum length – because ultimately, you will probably wear them every other day. We have a huge mens jeans sale on at the moment, with up to 70% off leading brands like G Star, Replay, Diesel and 883 Police. To make it easier to choose the right pair for you, we’ve put together our 5 golden rules for choosing and maintaining the perfect pair of jeans.
When choosing the size of jeans, always go slightly above instead of slightly under your measurements. Don’t be afraid to get your jeans altered to make them fit properly, a tailor can make a pair of jeans smaller, but will struggle to make them bigger. Also, when washing jeans for the first time they are likely to shrink by up to 2cm, allow for this when choosing the length.
When your new jeans arrive, try the sit down test. This involves simply putting the jeans on and sitting down on a chair – If your job requires you to sit at a desk, your jeans need to be comfortable for that. If you feel like the jeans are too tight, send them back and get the next size up – it would drive you crazy!
So you’ve bought a new pair of dark denim or black jeans and they look sharp, the last thing you want is for them to suddenly transform into washed-out grey jeans. First of all, avoid washing them for as long as possible – not to the point where you’re the smelly guy in the office, but don’t wash them as often as you would other clothes. When the first wash does become a necessity, wash them inside out on their own and do not tumble dry, this should avoid too much colour loss.
We’ve covered not washing them too often, but how do you keep them clean and fresh? It’s a bit weird, but it works - fold your jeans, pop them in a bag and chuck them in the freezer! Leave them overnight and take them out to thaw in the morning, once the jeans have thawed they’re good to go. Putting denim in the freezer helps kill any bacteria and keeps your jeans smelling good.
Know when to invest in a pair of jeans and when to pick up a cheap pair. Having a pair of great quality, premium jeans really is an essential for any man – but having a pair of inexpensive, less precious jeans is equally important. There are going to be times when you need to do things like; paint the livingroom, bleed a radiator or fix something in your car, the possibilities for error and ruining your good jeans are endless in these situations. If you have a pair of trusty inexpensive jeans, it really doesn’t matter how wrecked they get – their job is to protect your expensive pair.
Our mens jeans sale has a huge selection of jeans ranging from premium branded denim to inexpensive pairs – so you can pick up your premium and work jeans at up to 70% off. If you are looking for cheap jeans, the Soviet Midwash Regular Mens Jeans are now only £17.50. Another cheap jeans alternative are the Jack and Jones Stan Osak JJ740 Mens Jeans for £32.50. For premium jeans check out our Diesel sale outlet. Our Diesel Belther 815A Tapered Mens Jeans are currently down to £70 from £140.
